Clarifacts President Elected to National Association of Professional Background Screeners Board

Kevin Klimas, president and founder of Phoenix-based employment screening firm Clarifacts, was recently elected to the board of the National Association of Professional Background Screeners (NAPBS) for a two-year term.

“NAPBS’ mission is to promote ethical business practices, compliance with the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), equal employment opportunity, and state and international consumer protection laws relating to the background screening profession,” said Kevin Klimas, president and founder of Clarifacts. “It’s a mission I believe in, and I am proud and honored to contribute as a member of the board of directors.”

Klimas is a founding member of NAPBS, and since the association’s inception in 2003 has served in a variety of roles, most recently as the chair of the Background Screening Credentialing Council (BSCC). Klimas’ prior experience on the BSCC included a term as the council vice-chair, as well as chairman of the first standards sub-committee.

Prior to the official formation of the BSCC, Klimas led the standards team of the accreditation task force, whose directive was to solidify the Consumer Reporting Agency (CRA) accreditation standard clauses and create the auditing criteria. He was also a member of the first best practices committee.

“I am pleased to welcome Kevin Klimas to the 2014-15 NAPBS Board of Directors,” said Melissa L. Sorenson, Esq, NAPBS executive director. “With his leadership on the Background Screening Credentialing Council and longstanding volunteer commitment to the association, Kevin brings with him a wealth of industry expertise, association history and leadership experience. The association is fortunate to have Kevin’s continued dedication and leadership serving the membership.”

The NAPBS board is comprised of 13 members – the chairperson, immediate past chair, chair elect, treasurer, secretary, six regular member directors and two associate directors. The board’s role is to set the direction of the organization, administer implementation of the strategy and oversee the committees and international chapters.

Kevin was eager to offer his knowledge about background check best practices in order to help fellow business owners succeed and to spread the word that employment screening makes a significant impact on any business.

The book, Common Sense Business, from HarperBusiness Publishing, hit the store shelves on July 26 and includes a great deal of information from Kevin in the chapter on employees.

Steve’s book can be found at Amazon.com, Barnes and Noble, Borders and other major book retailers – we encourage you to check it out and spread the word that employment screening is a much-needed service.

In September, Kevin Klimas was elected to the Board of Directors for the Arizona Small Business Association (ASBA), an organization dedicated to the development, growth and success of business owners in Arizona.

As one of the youngest ASBA Board members, Kevin hopes to offer the organization a perspective on what it is like to be a 30-something business owner in the Valley, including the unique challenges this presents. He also looks forward to continuing his involvement in the HR Roundtable discussions for ASBA and lending insight into the background screening industry.

The first quarter of 2008 brought an increase in staff and an office addition to Clarifacts, due in large part to new client growth. The addition of clients and staff led to an office expansion in which Clarifacts acquired adjoining office space and nearly doubled in size.

“Clarifacts is in a significant growth phase as we are seeing an increase in the overall market for pre-employment screening,” said Kevin Klimas, president and founder of Clarifacts. “We are adding resources, both in personnel and in office space, to ensure our clients continue to receive the exemplary service that sets us apart from other screening providers.”

Clarifacts’ New Package Coincides with National Volunteer Month in April…

Clarifacts, a Phoenix-based employment screening company, is offering a special package for volunteer background checks throughout the month of April. The package is available to 501c3 organizations and includes a social security trace, county criminal record search, sex offender registry search and USA criminal search for only $15.

“In these tough economic times, non-profit organizations are relying heavily on volunteers to supplement and support their paid workforce,” said Kevin Klimas, president and founder of Clarifacts. “Given the important role volunteers play, and the interaction they often have with clients, organizations should always consider including them in the background screening process.”

HomeBase Youth Services, a Valley non-profit organization serving homeless youth and Clarifacts client since 2002, conducts a thorough background check on its volunteers to check for signs that a person may or may not be a good fit and to ensure the safety of the youth within its care.

“Our volunteers have a significant amount of interaction with the young people we serve, including working with them one-on-one in mentoring situations and on the streets through our street outreach program,” said Rachel Dallmann, volunteer coordinator for HomeBase Youth Services. “We need to know that these individuals have a clean record before we allow them to interact with our clients and before we place them in the community as our representatives.”

In honor of National Volunteer Month, which began in 1974 as an annual celebration of volunteerism, Clarifacts also is waiving the $125 new client set up fee for non-profit organizations looking to screen volunteer workers. Klimas to also Chair the Council’s Standards Committee…

Kevin Klimas, president and founder of Phoenix-based employment screening firm Clarifacts, was recently seated on the first ever Background Screening Credentialing Council (BSCC) by the National Association of Professional Background Screeners (NAPBS). The BSCC was created to ensure accredited firms meet or exceed standards of competency in integrity, security, consumer privacy and legal compliance.

“As part of a rapidly changing and increasingly complex industry, background screening companies need a measurable way to demonstrate proficiency, compliance and quality of service,” said Kevin Klimas, president and founder of Clarifacts. “I applaud NAPBS for establishing these rigorous standards and I look forward to working with other members on the Council as we commence with accreditation for the first time in our industry.”

Klimas also was appointed Chairman of the Standards Committee which will review the standards on an annual basis and make recommendations to the Council. The committee will also oversee the development of the interpretive guidance needed to explain any clauses or audit criteria to applicants and stakeholders.

“Kevin is one of our founding members of NAPBS and over the years has been active in the organization in various roles including best practices, the accreditation task force and now the Background Screening Credentialing Council,” said Tracy Seabrook, CAE, executive director of NAPBS. “I know his contributions as Chairman of the Standards Committee will benefit the industry greatly as companies explore accreditation.”
